10 Things You May Not Have Known (But Soon WIll Know) About New Zealand

SORRY for letting this get so horribly out of date. It's been a month and a half since my last blog I think. I'm composing a new one but it'll take a while, so just to tide you over here are...TEN THINGS YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT NEW ZEALAND! YAY! Those of you who've been here will think this is basic stuff.

1. Swimsuits are known as "togs."

2. Everyone refers to his/her significant other as their "partner."

3. New Zealand was the first country to allow women to vote.

4. With over 3,000 glaciers, it is the second most glaciated country in the world (after Nepal of course).

5. The Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa, which means "land of the long white cloud."

6. Dunedin (where my school is) is the most distal city in the world from London.

7. New Zealand has no native land mammals, just tons of birds found nowhere else in the world, many of them flightless. Of course, introduced mammals from Europe and Australia are everywhere and have wreaked havoc on native bird species.

8. New Zealand claims to be the first place to see the sun rise every morning.

9. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to summit Mt. Everest (along with his Sherpa), was a Kiwi. He's on their five dollar bill.

10. It's sweet as!
